ATTN: Hawaii County Council Member [Recipient’s Name]

Subject: Strong Opposition to Onerous Registration Process and Exorbitant Registration Fees for TARs.

Dear [Council Member’s Name],

I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the proposed transient accommodation rental amendments, particularly the burdensome registration process and exorbitant registration fees, including the renewal per bedroom fees. As a concerned resident, voter, tax payer and future homeowner within Hawaii County, I believe it is crucial to address these issues before implementing any additional regulations that could adversely impact our community.

1. Please explain to me your rationale behind developing a registration process that will undoubtedly increase the workload on an already overworked and understaffed building and planning department.

It is evident that the current resources available are already stretched thin and unable to fulfill the demands of their current responsibilities. It is critical that I understand your thinking to introduce additional administrative responsibilities that will only exacerbate the situation.

2. Why is there a proposition to impose high registration fees on homeowners who are simply trying to make ends meet?

Many local individuals and families depend on the income generated from their transient accommodations to supplement their livelihoods and cover the ever-increasing costs of living in Hawaii County.

By imposing exorbitant registration fees, we risk placing an additional unfair financial burden on these homeowners and their families, potentially jeopardizing their ability to make ends meet or continue providing valuable jobs to locals and services to visitors and the community.

3. The proposal to impose substantial fines on homeowners who are struggling to make ends meet raises significant concerns for me and my community. It seems counterproductive to punish individuals who are already facing financial challenges and rely on the revenue generated from transient accommodations to support themselves and their families.

Instead of penalizing them, it would be more constructive to focus on providing educational resources and support to ensure compliance with reasonable regulations, while still allowing homeowners to maintain a sustainable living.

Please reconsider this onerous registration process, your exorbitant registration fees, and the imposition of substantial fines on homeowners.

Your proposed amendments, if implemented, will create an undue burden on myself, my family and my community.

Your proposed amendments, if implemented, will place additional strain on an already overworked and understaffed building and planning department.

I kindly request that you take into account the concerns of homeowners who are trying to make ends meet and explore alternative solutions that strike a fair balance between regulation and support for our community members.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I trust that you will carefully consider the potential consequences of these amendments and make a decision that prioritizes the well-being of our community.

Sincerely,
